Four best football players were over the weekend nominated by Airtel Mobile Company to attend the Manchester United Football Clinic in Tanzania, marking the end of the Airtel Rising Stars football gala held in the four districts. The four that were chosen by a selection panel are: Mariatu Conteh of Suba United; Rashidatu Kamara , Red Eaglet; Patrick Gbenda, Makeni Stars; and Amza Kamara of 13 Legion. Speaking at the award ceremony held at the Miatta Conference Hall, the Managing Director of Airtel, Rsv Bhullar, said the programme started in July and ended late September, adding that the Rising Star competition was focused on identifying young and talented under 17 players. The MD admonished the winning team not to stop now but continue to do their best in the area they find themselves. He added that the nominated four young Sierra Leoneans will travel to Tanzania to the Manchester United Football Clinic where they will learn and gain experience from Coaches in the international arena, and they will also have the opportunity of meeting other players. MD Bhullar called on the winners to make proper use of the opportunity that has been given to them by Airtel as others are not fortunate to get this opportunity. The Minister of Sports, Mr. Paul Kamara in his statement, said that he is pleased that they have got another partner in the development of sports. He added that Airtel has come at a time of President Koroma’s Agenda for Change in which he makes it clear that he has to bring change in the country “therefore our mission in the Sport Ministry is to bring about soccer revolution.” Paul Kamara disclosed that they are witnessing a ceremony wherein Airtel is catching them young which is geared towards building a solid future for the young players to succeed. He also stated that it is important that a project starts from the beginning and that this is the right step Airtel has taken. Trophies and cash prizes were given to the winners for fair play, best player, best goalkeeper, and top goal scorer.
