Three former students of the Milton Margai School for the Blind Paul Charles, Suleiman Moriba and Miatta have alleged that the Acting Principal Albert Sandy has been misusing funds meant for the running of the school.
They alleged that out of government funding allocated to the school only certain amount of the money is used and he pays the rest into his personal account. They also alleged that this had created problems for some students in secondary and tertiary institutions.
.Responding to the allegations, Mr. Sandy said he does not receive funding from government on time and he has to sort ways to pay the fees and salaries of both staff and students adding that he only receives government subvention for the first six month in June which should not be so.
Paul Charles further alleged that in 2006 a group gave scholarships to JSS pupils of the school but when the names were sent the names included some SSS students which meant something fishy went on and the institution refused to continue their sponsorship.
It was also alleged that a 15 KVA generator was donated by the past government but the Acting Principal confessed openly at the Ministry of Education and at the school that he sold it and bought two smaller ones: one for his use at home and the other was stationed at the school.
On these issues the Acting Principal alleged that those causing trouble are not students of the school and do not want to be under parental care.
Suleiman Moriba further told Awoko that he sat to the BECE at the Sierra Leone Grammar School but because of the privatization of the school he could not gain admission Mr. Sandy asked him out of the compound.
Miatta said she left the compound because she was constantly being harassed by boys who were alleged to be the blue eye boys of the Acting Principal and whenever she made a complaint to the Acting Principal he would not listen to her.
It was also alleged by these students that the school’s compound was being used as a garage as there is an agreement between the Acting Principal and a guy for the use of the compound which has restricted the movement of the children in the compound.
Because of this, they said a lot of things have been missing and the blind children are being blamed.
The Acting Principal in response said that most of the structures are being damaged by the children and whenever they are ready to go on holidays they take away bed nets and electric bulbs.
