Despite moves by government and women’s groups to stop violence against women, it seems to be falling on deaf ears as women still continue to suffer. One recent incident is in Kailahun where 28-year-old, Haja Lahai, a rice farmer in Salema town was pitilessly beaten by her boy friend, Hassan Kamara, over Le15, 000. She is now admitted at the Kailahun Government Hospital.
Hassan Kamara, according to sources is, IS a stranger from Kabala residing in Salema town. According to an eye witness, Haja and Hassan are lovers but the boy friend recently fell in love with another lady which prompted Haja to ask Hassan for her household items and money she had given to him.
The request by Haja, according to the witness, resulted in an argument which led to the beating and Hassan who feared that she was dead fled from the scene, but he was arrested by Police at the Sandoro Penguya Police Post near the Guinea border.
The Minister of Social Welfare, Gender and Children’s Affairs, Dr Dennis Sandy who was in Kailahun, ordered that the perpetrator be brought to Freetown to face court action. The lady was unable to explain because she was bleeding.
