The National Coordinator of a local Non Governmental Organization Friends of the Earth Sierra Leone (FOE-SL) Mohamed Kenei Sei has intimated the press in Kenema City that structures has already been put in place to embark on the planting of trees around the City during World Environmental Tree Planting Day on 5th June 2010.Mohamed Kenei Sei disclosed that the forest authorities have suffered so many damages in the hands of loggers whose activities he said must be checked if they are to solve the depreciating forest from extinction.
He disclosed that they have also engaged farmers and providing them with alternative source of livelihood to encourage them to abstain from up land farming activities to discourage deforestation.
Sei expressed dissatisfaction over the poor commitment of the Kenema City Council in their effort to rebuilding the forest around the township, and he therefore commended the Kenema District Council for its support and cooperation in the fight to protect the forest reserves to avert deforestation.
The coordinator revealed that this year’s activities will combat climate change in the community and therefore they will be concentrating around the horticulture facilities in Kenema City where trees will be planted to prevent deforestation. He therefore called on the Council to send forestry committee members for training in order to match up its stride in protecting the forest at all times.
