First Lady promises support for Women

The First Lady, Sia Nyama Koroma, has promised to support women in Sierra Leone to achieve their socio-economic rights in the country. She made this statement at a reception held at Chinese Embassy in Freetown to celebrate International Women’s Day. Speaking on the theme: “women’s equal access to education, training, science and technology”, she expressed delight to be part of this year’s celebration”
The First Lady said government is committed to gender parity and equity in every part of society, citing the girl child education and the passing into law of the Gender Acts.
She also spoke about government’s efforts in addressing maternal and infant mortality rates, stating that Sierra Leone is committed to the implementation of the UN Security Resolution 1325.
The First Lady also lauded women taking over higher governance positions in the country like the NEC Chairperson, Chief Justice and other reputable women who have excelled in society.
Wife of the Chinese Ambassador, Kuang Weilin, said “women stand for beauty, independence, progress and that efforts and struggles have won us the recognition of our contribution to families and society.”
Women account for one half of China’s population and the fast economic development and social progress in recent years have enabled the Chinese women to play an increasingly important part in society.”Women are no longer housewives in China” she said.
