The First Lady, Mrs. Sia Nyama Koroma launched the Maternal and Child Health Week also known as the “Mami en Pekin Welbodi week” at the National Stadium on the 27th May 2010. Speaking to the gathering she stated that “every mother and child count” and that healthy mothers and children are the backbone of every nation.
The Chief Medical Officer, Dr K.S Daoh chaired the launching ceremony. Statements were delivered by the Ministry of Health and Sanitation, UN Country Team, Rotary International and Helen Keller International. All the speakers stated their support for the promotion of maternal and child health and eradication of poliomyelitis in Sierra Leone.
The First Lady and other guests were taken on a conducted tour of booths of the health fair put up by Organizations to display their work in promoting maternal and child health. She was presented with technical information on maternal and child health when she visited the WHO Booth. She also vaccinated infants against polio to mark the launching of the 4th round of Poliomyelitis campaign.
“Mami en Pekin Welbodi week” is a bi-annual event adopted by the government of Sierra Leone to accelerate health interventions for mothers and children. During the week, integrated package of health interventions: polio vaccine, Vitamin A supplements, de-worming and the distribution of insecticide treated nets will be offered to the target population nationwide.
