Fire engulfed the former Public Works Department (PWD) building on Saturday 4th January 2020 leaving over 200 workers jobless and properties worth billions of Leones destroyed. According to Michael Junior Kamara alias Vanpersie, a worker at the PWD workshop, it is suspected that the fire started next door to the workshop, in an area occupied by the disabled, who were allegedly burning their waste gathered from the Saturday cleaning exercise. The fire from the waste burning by the disabled spread to the fence dividing the area occupied by the disabled from the workshop. Attempts to control the spread proved futile as the workshop was closed. “Currently has you can see we have nowhere to start, all of our machines are gone,” said “Vanpersie” who added that finished and unfinished products including their tools and machines have all been destroyed by the fire. Another worker Abu Bakarr claimed that over 200 government staff and apprentice carpenters have been affected by the fire.
