The Federation of International Football Associations (FIFA) second goal project which is to replace the natural grass with an artificial turf at the football academy field at kingtom have started though the one at the Wusum field in Makeni has still not started.
Speaking about the project the administrative secretary of the Sierra Leone Football Association (SLFA) Abubakarr Kabba (sweet Kay) said that the project is funded by FIFA and the money is going directly to the company which won the bid for the contract.
He stated that the SLFA and the Sierra Leone Government do not have to offer any financial assistance to the project which will cost about 400 thousand US dollars to complete both fields.
He explained further that the first FIFA goal project was 2003-2004 when they constructed the football Academy under Justice Tolla Thompson’s regime.
He said that when FIFA contacted the SLFA about the second FIFA goal project the association wasted no time in deciding to have an artificial turf at the football academy and the Wusum field so that footballers in Sierra Leone will have the opportunity to play on an artificial turf.
He mentioned that playing on an artificial turf is affecting most of our players during their international competitions as most fields now have artificial turf.
He disclosed that an English company won the bid for the project at the Football Academy and they are using a Gambian company MABA General Construction Company to do the work.
The head of the expert’s team from Gambia Company Bakery Sanyang said that this is the third contract they have received since they started fixing artificial turf and they have done it in Senegal and Gambia.
He revealed that they came into Sierra Leone with five experts to do the work and the man power work will be done by Sierra Leoneans. He promised that they will be able to finish the academy work within three months if they have a fine weather.
Sanyang said because of the professionalism in their work they have also been contacted by another Italian company ‘Itagreen’ through Dr Danello to also construct the Wusum field in Makeni which will also start as soon they have completed turning the sod at the football academy.
Some of the experts he said will now move to Makeni to start work which will be going on simultaneously to see that both fields are done in very good time.
