A week-long FIFA/CAF elite Referees course is in progress at the Football Academy in Kingtom, with a total of 26 Referees drawn from all parts of the country. Speaking during the opening ceremony, Jonathan Leigh, Chairman of the course, noted that Sierra Leone Referees have benefited from quality training under the Football Association. “This is a demonstration of the FA’s desire to develop football especially with referees who form one of the five components of the game. He appealed to the referees to take the course seriously, as nobody can take from them what they will learn from the course. The FIFA Referee Instructor from Ghana, Joseph Wellington, appealed to the media to encourage the referees as they are the only people who can do so by reporting the right thing. Wellington said this time around, fitness test will be 10 lapses instead of the usual 12 lapses. The Media Officer of the Football Association, Sorie Ibrahim, said the course is very important as over the years, they have been encountering problems with officiating, which is why the course is very important. He stated: “this is the third Referee’s course organized by the Football Association and this is to tell you how serious the FA is. We want to equip the Referees who have a vital part to play in the development of the game,” Sorie Ibrahim said.
