The Freetown City Council Mayor George Herbert Williams yesterday left his air-conditioned office to storm the Principal Streets of Freetown dressed in Traffic Warden Jacket with a cane in his hand chasing street traders and Bike riders under the hot burning sun who are found flouting City Ordinances.
The Mayor also helped to control the flow of traffic at Siaka Steven Street in Freetown, flanked by metropolitan Police officers and assisted by the Sierra Leone Police Traffic Division which helped immensely to reduce the heavy traffic jam.
The Mayor in a sober mood said “we are going to get rid of this menace on our streets referring to street traders, bike riders and wheelbarrow pullers will be severely dealt with for flouting the law” he strictly warned.
Mayor Williams also said the Freetown City Council is prepared to maintain the cleanliness of the city to attract visitors to the admiration of ordinary Sierra Leoneans. In doing so the mayor said he will help us come to terms with standards practiced in other countries.
Our reporter caught up with Mayor Herbert Williams chasing and caning street trader’s wheelbarrow pullers and street beggars along Siaka Steven Street precisely between Law Courts Building and Bank of Sierra Leone. The flow of traffic at the central part of the city has been chaotic and confusing as bike riders, pedestrians and motorists struggle to make use of the slightest space available leading to traffic moving at a snails – pace to the dismay of the general public.
The presence of the Mayor on the streets of Freetown prompted taxi drivers to drive cautiously and bike riders to divert their route to other streets making it easier for both pedestrians and motorist.
A cross section of curious bye-standards interviewed by this Press lauded the Mayors initiative in moving on to the street to direct traffic, but others opined that the presence of the Mayor on the street will send a signal to defaulters to desist. Mohamed Kamara in an interview said the Mayor is idle and do not have priorities in his agenda because there are important issues to address in the city, rather than chasing and caning on the street this is disgraceful, he asserted.
He also said that, there are trained and qualified personnel at the Sierra Leone Police Traffic Division and S.L.R.T.A Traffic Wardens to control the free flow of traffic in the city there is no need for the Mayor to storm the street in the name of controlling traffic By Saidu Bah
