As part of its Civic Responsibility, Freetown City Council on Tuesday this week donated physical cash to certain sets of people it considers as destitute.  About Le 250,000 was donated to orphans, destitute, disabled and blind groups.
Explaining reasons for the donations the Mayor of the Freetown Municipality Herbert George Williams said the donation was part of moves to compliment the effort of the government.
He disclosed that “as part of our Corporate Civic Responsibility as a Council, we are making these donations to help address the continued suffering of people in need.”
The Mayor revealed that most orphans in Freetown were in need of help.
He said seeking the welfare of these sets of needy group of people whose guardians were overburdened with their responsibilities was critical to the Council.
He further stated that they had been providing these kinds of support not only to the targeted beneficiaries of the said donation, but also to the aged.
However, the Mayor expressed disappointment over the negative attitudes of what he referred to as “certain unscrupulous individuals” who were as he puts it “deliberately refusing to pay their Local Taxes.”
He said the refusal of these categories of people to pay their taxes was forcing Council to operate under tight budgets adding that that was making it almost impossible for them to undertake such initiatives.
Furthermore, two bales of clothing were donated to the remand home as encouragement for children who come in conflict with the law.
The Mayor mentioned that children who fall foul of the law should not be treated as criminals but should be seen as people who need correction.
He pointed out that the clothes were given to the remand home as encouragement for the children whom he said needed care and support.
