Eye Care Department schools Health workers

The Eye Care Department from the Kenema Government Hospital has ended two days training on primary eye care services for health workers at the MCH Aides Training Center in Kailahun Town, Kailahun District. Speaking at the opening ceremony, the District Medical Officer, Dr. David Boom, said eye care services have never been integrated into the Primary Health. Dr. Boom commended the team from Kenema City for their initiative and timely intervention. He said most health workers are not knowledgeable in eye care related problems and referral issues and described primary health as the first point of entry into health services. Dr. Boom said skills acquired during the training will help trainees to undertake simple eye problems in their areas of control. He emphasized that it is of great importance for staff to acquire primary eye care ideas which, he said, will help them treat cases that need immediate attention at their different health posts. Dr. Boom admonished participants to share whatever knowledge they have gained from the training with their colleagues who are not fortunate to be at the training. Addressing participants, the Cataract Surgeon from the Eye Department of Kenema Government Hospital, Earnest Challey, said the purpose of the training was to put eye care into their normal primary health care. He assured the participants that they will be able to treat common eye disease from the basic eye treatment they have acquired. Earnest Challey encouraged participants to give the necessary advice to patients and also refer patients with acute eye problems to the government hospital for proper medication. By Saffa Moriba
