Sierra Leone: The Paramount Chief of Nongowa chiefdom Kenema district PC Sadiq Mattoe Kapuwa has called on the youths of Tilorma community and its environs to embrace agriculture as it is the only way out for them as individuals and the nation as a whole. He made this call during the launching ceremony of an Expo Nongowa Agricultural Program at Tilorma community by the Resident Minister East Andrew Ansu Fatorma.
He said the Tilorma community has been blessed with 100 acres of agricultural investment with Dr. Ibrahim Seaga Shaw chairman and Commissioner Right to Access to Information Commission. He said the investment has created an opportunity for the youths in the community to be meaningfully engaged which he described as a boost for the community and therefore appealed to them to fully make use of the opportunity.
In his welcome address the town chief of Tilorma Boima Swaray said Dr. Ibrahim Seaga Shaw’s idea is highly welcomed in Tilorma as it is in line with the president agenda for prosperity. He thanked him for meaningfully engaging the youths in the community which he described as a development not only for their families but the community by diverting the minds of most youths from sand mining and other activities to agriculture.
The Crop officer in the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry Kadiatu Alice Koroma told her audience that there are more support now from government in the area of agriculture than before, adding every chiefdom is supported in the areas of agriculture and appealed to the youths to take advantage of the opportunity by going into commercial agriculture. She spoke about the tractors and other support for agriculture across the nation.
In his statement the Chief Executive Officer Expo Nongowa Agricultural Program Dr. Ibrahim Seaga Shaw said his move to invest in agriculture is in response to the call made by His Excellency the President Dr. Julius Maada Bio for all to engage in agriculture irrespective of status. He said his investment is targeting Nongowa chiefdom because he hailed from Nongowa chiefdom and that his target is to pay back to his community. He called on his brothers and sisters to continue embracing the development stride as it belongs to Tilorma community and generation will continue to benefit.
He disclosed that his area of study is development at Masters level and his dream has been to continue investing in agriculture as a development stride. He said for this current year he is developing thirty acres out of the one hundred acres in cash crop production of cocoa, and next year another thirty acres will be utilized too, and in November this year he will embark on the cultivation of thirty acres of Inland Valley swamp cultivation. And that his future plan is to establish a factory in Tilorma community for the production of finished product. He called on all and sundry to invest in agriculture especially his colleagues who are better placed in society
