Freetown, SIERRA LEONE – Farmers in Gbesseh and Kamara Chiefdoms of Kono District are celebrating newfound success in their agricultural endeavours, thanks to transformative initiatives funded by the European Union (EU) and the German Financial Corporation.
Under the auspices of the “Pro-poor Growth for Peace Consolidation” project, co-funded by the German Financial Corporation through KFW Development Bank, farmers have experienced a significant uplift in their farming practices.
In Gbesseh Chiefdom, the provision of a grain store has revolutionized the way farmers operate. Hawa T. Tima, a local farmer, expressed gratitude for the unity fostered by the grain store. Previously plagued by losses due to grain destruction by rats, farmers now find relief in the secure storage facility. Tima highlighted the convenience of grinding rice and other grains, which was previously a laborious task. With heartfelt appreciation, she thanked Team Europe for this invaluable support.
Similarly, in Kamara Chiefdom, the German Corporation for International Cooperation (GIZ) has empowered farmers through capacity-building programs. Mary Sogbor, a beneficiary, diverted her career path from nursing to fish farming after completing GIZ training. Encouraged by newfound skills, she embraces farming as a lifelong pursuit. Sogbor’s sentiment is echoed by Sahr Quee, who credits GIZ workshops for transforming his farming career. Equipped with theoretical knowledge and practical skills, Quee now engages in diverse agricultural activities, including crop production, vegetable farming, and poultry.
Inspired by innovations such as incubators and tractors introduced during training, Quee and his peers established the Yormatta Youth Farmers Association. Together, they ambitiously plan to cultivate rice across 100 hectares of land, exemplifying the spirit of collaboration and resilience.
European Union Ambassador to Sierra Leone, His Excellency Manuel Muller, commended the fruitful partnership between EU member states and implementing partners like NaCSA. Stressing the importance of collective effort, he expressed gratitude to the local community for their unwavering support.
Johannes Behreus, Head of Cooperation at the German Embassy in Sierra Leone, emphasized the pivotal role of collaboration in driving sustainable development. Acknowledging the strength derived from partnerships with government, communities, and stakeholders, Behreus underscored the need for continued cooperation to build a prosperous future.
Through these initiatives, EU and German financial cooperation are not only transforming farming practices but also empowering communities to thrive in Kono District and beyond. SKS/17/5/2024
