On Monday 18 November 2019, Ambassador Tom Vens, Head of the European Union (EU) delegation, was recognized for his outstanding work in protecting the environment by Shout Climate Change Africa (SCCA). Ambassador Vens was recognized as a climate change hero for 2019 and also as the most outstanding Ambassador of the year. According to the Executive Director of Shout Climate Change Africa, Finnex J. Asibor, the EU Ambassador has played a tremendous role in the protection of the environment by engaging in key programs dealing with environmental issues. He maintained the environmental award is to motivate people and institutions that are working hard in the protection of the environment and inspire those that are not into any environmental work. “The environment is all what we have and we need to protect it,” Asibor said. Ambassador Vens thanked the organisers adding that it is a collective effort from the rest of the EU staff and accolades must be shared. He maintained that the climate change debate started some 31 years ago and as a Union they want to see States abide by the 2015 Paris agreement. “We need to step up our efforts. This young generation are going to face the consequences themselves.” The Ambassador said in order for the environment to be protected, “We must change the way we do things,” adding that they will continue to partner with institutions for the protection of the environment.
