Disaster struck residents of the hilly New England ville yesterday (Monday) when 17 year old Aminata Kamara of Wallace Johnson Junior secondary school met her untimely death when she went to collect water from the only available spring water spot.
Unfortunately for the teenager a big boulder which was delicately poised over the watering point unceremoniously dislodged and fell down crushing Aminata to death and seriously injuring 2 others.
Eye witness Ibrahim Kamara – dubbed as the PRO for ‘water is life’ organization says “in an effort to fetch some water from the spring yesterday, I met four other people who were busy getting water but I decided to talk to the President of ‘Water is life’ adjacent the spring water box when a (loud) sound echoed. On return I discovered a big stone that was over hanging the spring water had collapsed covering the entire body of the victim Aminata Kamara and a lady and boy Amie and Alie were half buried under the stone.” The latter two were later removed and rushed to Emergency hospital while the remains of Aminata Kamara was taken to the mortuary.”
He said the watering point which serves over 6,000 residents of that community from time in memorial to date had got a lot of pressures from nearby community members who usually come to fetch water from the same spot. He pointed out that maintenance of the spot has been a big problem regardless of all the colorful promises by their MP Julius Cuffie and the Mayor of the Freetown City Council.
He explained that, they have been up keeping the watering point from Le 100 contributions paid by residents in the community.
The president of the ‘water is life’ organization at New England, Alimamy Peters said, he has made a lot of representation to the authorities concerned to address the acute water problem in that community but all efforts remained thwarted, adding that he has always branded that spring water point as a “death trap” but however admitted that the incident was a natural disaster caused by the heavy down pour of water.
The whole place went berserk with the presence of Hon. Julius Cuffie as many were crying while others were busy blasting ‘Cuffie Go! Cuffie Go!’ but it appears as if the Hon. Julius Cuffie was playing a ‘quiet diplomacy’ by maintaining a cool head while he proceeded to the scene where the havoc was caused to assess the magnitude of the incident.
After his assessment, the Honorable told Awoko that he deeply sympathized with the people of the community especially the bereaved family, but was quick to point out that the incident was a natural disaster caused by the occupation of some settlers who have constructed dwelling houses around the spring tap without due consideration to the after effect.
“Water problem is perennial in the entire city of Freetown and I cannot afford to address it single handedly because I am not a rich man but as member of the legislative body I will continue to advocate to government and other agencies to help my constituency” the honorable vowed.
He revealed that when he was voted into Parliament in 2007, he requested some mini project proposals from community members which sum up to Le 60 million which he tried to push through NaCSA and other agencies but to no avail.
