The Kenema District Deputy Director of Education (DDE) John Amara Swaray has held a consultative meeting with heads of Primary schools in the Kenema district and stake holders of the Kenema District Council (KDC) and City Council at the District Council hall along Maxwell Khobe street in Kenema city.
In his address to participants the Deputy Director of Education disclosed that the purpose of the meeting is to share ideas together and to re-inform them about the new government policy of education, especially on issues relating to subsidies to various schools in the Kenema district.
Talking about the devolution system in the educational sector, Mr. Swaray said that the government has now approved that the councils in every district in the country be in charge of subsidies and that every school should open two bank accounts – one for subsidies and the other for salaries.
He further stated that the Kenema District Council will now be responsible for schools out of the Kenema city while the Kenema City Council (KCC) will be responsible for schools within the city.
He revealed that both the councils and the Ministry of Education Youth and Sport (MEYS) will be monitoring these accounts of the various schools in the district to ensure proper utilisation.
Mr. Swaray spoke about the supply of teaching and learning materials that have already been distributed and those that will be distributed in due course by the government. He appealed to all to put the country first and live up to the expectations of the general masses.
