FREETOWN, SIERRA LEONE – Abu Bakarr Turay, a motor driver, has found himself incarcerated at the Male Correctional Center in Freetown due to allegations of illegal possession of a prohibited drug.
Turay appeared before Magistrate Sahr Kekura at Ross Road Court No. 1 in Freetown after being accused of carrying three hundred fifty-one (351) wraps of dried leaves suspected to be kush. Turay faces a single charge of unlawful possession of a prohibited drug.
According to the police, the accused was found in possession of 351 wraps of dried leaves suspected to be kush on Sunday, August 6, 2023, at Old Railway Line in Freetown.
Testifying in court, prosecution witness Sergeant 10454 Ferewah Sesay, who is attached to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) at the Regional Ross Road Police Station, Harbour Division, recounted that he was on duty at his division on Sunday, August 6, 2023, when Detective Inspector Umar Jalloh apprehended the accused. Jalloh brought the accused to the station along with the 351 wraps of kush as evidence.
Sesay further testified that he was assigned to investigate the matter. On August 7, 2023, Detective Sergeant 1066 Conteh B. Mohamed penned a letter to the Head of the Forensic Lab at the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to seek their expert opinion.
At this juncture, Chief Inspector Isatu Bangura, representing the prosecution, requested an adjournment, assuring the court that during the next hearing, she would present the mentioned letter as evidence.
Magistrate Kekura granted the application for adjournment, but he remanded Turay into custody. The case has been adjourned to October 4, 2023. SKS/5/10/2023
