The Chief, Parliamentary representative and councillor in the Dokorty community located in Wilkinson Road in the West end of Freetown past Saturday joined the youths to crown Moses Dumbuya as their newly elected youth chairman of the community.
Moses Dumbuya polled 667 votes as against his opponent Sheka Kargbo’s 592 votes in their March 14, 2010 elections.
Speaking at the ceremony, Hon Charles Kalawa of Constituency 111 admonished youths to prepare and take on leadership role in their community.
He spoke on the importance of community empowerment which he said will foster development in their community.
Hon Kalawa maintained that he has now got a channel through the chairman which he will use to communicate with his people in the community.
The Parliamentary representative called on the youth chairman to organize a meeting where he will talk to the youths.
Chief Pa Alimamy Santigie Kargbo spoke on the lawlessness, indiscipline, abusive languages and dress code of youths in the community.
He stated that with unity in the community it will bring development and progress, advising them to be law abiding.
Chief Pa Alimamy Kargbo urged those houses without latrines to have one as anyone caught using a black plastic bag as latrines will be fined.
Sergeant Solomon A Mansaray Information Officer, Congo Cross Police Division said the crowning ceremony is a turning point in the community.
He appealed to the Chairman to make a u-turn on the areas of armed robbery, drug taking and bad fishing methods by fishermen in the community.
In his acceptance speech, Moses Dumbuya stated that he is “the only Chairman with the mandate of four years”.
The Dokorty community, he said has been a victim of neglect from basic social necessities like market, hospital and clean drinking water. “Our road network is the worst in the western area.”
He explained that over 1,000 youths in the community are unemployed and unskilled and this has led to theft, prostitution and lawlessness in the community.
The youth Chairman reiterated that “I will not hesitate to deal with anybody standing on my way to transform this community” adding that his intention is not political but a desire to help the community.
Bye laws of the community were declared by Sergeant Solomon Mansaray.
