Some Members of Parliament on board the Parliament bus ABO 310, about to perform their oversight functions were shocked when the bus developed mechanical fault.
These MPs were from the Parliamentary Oversight Committee on Information and Communication on board the bus with some Journalists visiting the facilities at the Information Ministry.
The Committee headed by Hon Veronica Sesay converged at the Ministry of Information, Youyi Building to head for the SIERRATEL earth station at Wilberforce when the bus came to a halt at China House. Concerns were raised by some of the MPs with regard to the faulty chairs and unkempt condition and also whether the bus could climb the hills of Wilberforce and Leicester Peak. Some MPs had to use their vehicles whilst others and a handful of Journalists crammed in the official vehicles of the Minister and his Deputy. The Parliamentary Oversight Committees in Parliament are charged with the responsibilities of overseeing the activities of the various ministries and to make them efficient. However, that function could only be performed if MPs are equipped in their oversight functions.
During the last session of Parliament, the Majority Party Whip, Hon Ibrahim Bundu spoke to Awoko that their oversight functions were not properly performed due to lack of funds. It would be unwise though for MPs to be provided with vehicles and other facilities by the Ministry they are either investigating or assessing as that might have influence their recommendations, said one observer.
