The Freetown International Airport Lungi is shabby and messy to the discomfort and embarrassment of visitors as most of the toilets and urinals are in a deplorable state.
Toilets and urinals at the airport stink to a point of causing bad odours to the airport environment and similar embarrassment and abysmal dismay for not only visitors from abroad but other workers and casual guests at the airport on a daily basis.
It was unsightly to see the toilets floors unbearably scruffy and wet; producing unpleasant odour with a mixture of urine, wine and cigarettes butts that litter the entire place thereby delivering an offensive and unhygienic atmosphere.
Most of the connections to facilitate access of water to the toilets and urinals are not in good working order. As a result users are forced to secure water in empty plastic bottles to clean themselves up while most women use tissues or papers in the toilets and urinals.
With the acute lack of basic water facility at the International Airport, it would be needless to mention the provision of other facilities such as dustbins, air fresheners and hand driers or towels.
Workers at the airport who spoke to Awoko on condition of anonymity blamed the management of the Airport for not endeavoring to put any mechanism in place to ensure that the airport environment is kept clean for commuters and visitors.
Cleaners interviewed by this reporter were nervous in explaining about the deplorable status of the airport facilities. Sadly they expressed regret over the situation and called on management to provide the necessary logistics to clean the airport facilities.
