The Executive Director of Health Alert, Victor Lansana Koroma has emphatically declared in Freetown that the presence of Ebola in the country is real and that people should stop denial of its existence.
He declared the virus as “a common enemy of the state” and called for a concerted national effort to contain the viral menace. “Ebola is real and it is killing people and we must stop the denial and come together to fight the common enemy,” Mr. Koroma stated.
He made this declaration yesterday at the Gender Grassroots and Empowerment hall during a one-day training of Health Alert District Coordinators and media Ambassadors.
Victor Lansana said the campaign against the Ebola virus should be rooted in a collective will of a people to root out something that is inimical to their national socio-economic development.
He declared that as a people, Sierra Leoneans should not allow themselves to be defeated by an alien. He said that since the outbreak of the virus in March they have been doing what they could in the fight against the virus. He said because they consider the Ebola situation as a national crisis, they have partnered with the Ministry of Health and Sanitation in the sensitization of communities in their operational areas.
He said the fight is not a Ministry of Health fight alone but a fight of every Sierra Leonean. He maintained that the seriousness of the outbreak puts it well above political rhetoric and calls for patriotism.
Victor Lansanah said that the campaign will be implemented in two phases, one starting with sensitization and awareness-raising of people with the use of Music Ambassadors and the second will comprise a team of journalists to assess the state of the Ebola outbreak in Bo, Kenema and Kailahun.
