Following the success of the voting process on Election Day on August 11th 2007, the Diplomatic Corps accredited to the Republic of Sierra Leone wishes to observe that the conduct of the voting was satisfactory, peaceful and visibly transparent and to endorse the view of the National Electoral Commissioner that voting was successful. As partners in the overall interest of Sierra Leone, the Diplomatic Corps congratulates the people of Sierra Leone for their exemplary conduct, commitment and the most appropriate use of the opportunity given to them to exercise their civic responsibilities on voting day.
Quite understandably, the success registered on the voting day could not have been accomplished but for the determination, dedication and commitment of the officials of the National Electoral Commission (NEC). In this regard, the Diplomatic Corps wishes to commend NEC for the exemplary standard set in organizing the voting process.
Meanwhile, the electoral process is ongoing. The Corps took the liberty of being properly informed on the next stages of the electoral process with particular reference to vote counting and tallying process at the National Tally Centre in NEC Headquarters. It has been amply demonstrated to the Corps that NEC’s projected arrangements are on track in order to meet up with the genuine and legitimate aspirations of the people of Sierra Leone. The Corps has noted the desire on the part of the NEC to be as meticulous as possible to ensure not only the credibility of the voting but also that the final results reflect the true wishes of the people of Sierra Leone.
In view of the foregoing, the Diplomatic Corps wishes to appeal to everyone, particularly the leadership of all the political parties and their supporters, to stay calm and exercise restraint as a means of encouragement to NEC to complete its constitutional assignment taking into consideration the reality of logistical constraints before it.
