Freetown, SIERRA LEONE – Two newly introduced teams in the 2023 Leone Rock Premier League, Kahunla Rangers from Kenema and Kholifa Stars from Magburaka, are grappling with a goal drought, being the only clubs among the 18 participating teams yet to score a single goal in their two league matches.
Both Kahunla Rangers and Kholifa Stars have conceded two goals in the same number of games played, finding themselves at the bottom of the league table, with Kahunla Rangers in 17th place and Kholifa Stars in the 18th position. While Kahunla Rangers have secured one point, Kholifa Stars are yet to earn any.
In contrast, the other sixteen clubs, including FC Kallon in 13th place and Bhantal FC, the debutant victors in the 2022/23 National First Division Playoff, have all managed to find the back of the net at least once.
Defending champions Bo Rangers currently lead the league with six points, scoring four goals and conceding only one. Lamboi Football Club of Lungi, in 3rd position, has also scored four goals but conceded two.
Wusum Stars of Makeni and Lamboi Football Club, in 4th and 3rd positions respectively, along with Port Authority, Freetown City, and Real Republicans in 7th, 8th, and 14th places respectively, have all scored three goals so far. Mighty Blackpool, last season’s runners-up, currently in 2nd place with six points, SLIFA FC (6), East End Lions (9), Old Edwardians (10), Wilberforce Strikers (11), and Diamond Stars in 15th place have all managed to score two goals.
Approaching their upcoming league matches, officials and players of Kholifa Stars and Kahunla Rangers have assured their fans that they will not only put an end to their goal drought but also secure their first victory in the championship. Kholifa Stars’ captain, Prince Solo Marrah, expressed disappointment about losing back-to-back matches at home but encouraged fans to continue supporting and believing in them as they aim for a much-needed win in their next match.
