The National Telecommunications Commission (NATCOM) has revoked the license granted to Datatel (SL) Limited that was provisionally transferred to Celcom (SL) Limited effective immediately.
As a result of this step taken by NATCOM, Datatel (SL) Limited and by extension – Celcom (SL) Limited have ceased to have the legal authority to provide telecommunications and related network services in Sierra Leone
The Commission further warned that any attempt by the said companies to provide such services in the country will be contravening the provisions of the Telecommunications Act 2006 as amended.
Any attempt by them to operate illegally will warrant a penalty, as the Commission is aware of an illegal communication by one company as far back as August informing international carriers/GSM Operators that they are fully operational now in Sierra Leone.
Speaking to a Commissioner he noted that “this development marks yet another milestone in our untiring effort to bring sanity to the rather challenging telecoms sector”.
Barely a week ago, when GSM Operators unilaterally increased tariff without the knowledge of the Commission, this prompted the immediate intervention of the Commission resulting in the reversion to the acceptable price of Le3, 400 per 100 units.
