The President of the Sierra Leone National Cycling Association (SLNCA) Winston DC Crowther has disclosed that the association will be forming a riders club.
He stated that the riders clubs have to be part of their agenda and also a project that they want to enhance in Sierra Leone which is ‘cycling for all.’
President Crowther states that there are a lot of people in the world and Sierra Leone who love cycling but only a few can become race men and women. Some of them love to ride but because of age or sickness they cannot ride that is why as an executive they have decided to set up these clubs so that everybody can become a rider.
He disclosed that they want to find a venue where people can ride in order to be able to develop a riders club in Sierra Leone which they want to be different and which they hope will attract tourists in the country with people in other countries flying in to come and ride.
He also disclosed that Sierra Leone has a very good weather for riding bicycles and they are trying to attract a lot of people to the club who are interested in riding.
President Crowther disclosed that the riders club will start next month and in preparation they as an executive invited interested people to a very important meeting this past Friday at the National Stadium hostel.
He also mentioned that the executive has a lot of plans for this year but mainly they are looking into three international competitions this year that they expect to participate in.
He expressed the desire to improve on their performances in international competitions especially the ‘Tour Du Faso’ that will take place in October, ‘Tour Du Ivory Coast’ that will take place in May and also looking to take part in tours in Cameroon and Senegal.
Crowther disclosed that the ECOWAS cycling tour this year will involve four countries starting from Nigeria going through Benin, Togo and finishing in Accra Ghana. He said they will go there to defend their championship as this competition will involve all the membership of ECOWAS.
The cyclists he said are well prepared in mind and body but they lack proper equipments for competing in international competitions.
Funding to take part in such competitions he said was lacking and mentioned that the association was looking for funding from outside. President Crowther said that over the years they will be looking for sponsors.
