Crime Officer for the Makeni Police Division, Theophilus Koroma has disclosed that, the crime rate in Makeni is low, when comparing that city to other cities in the country.
Speaking to Awoko recently in Makeni Koroma said, “looking at Makeni and doing a comparative assessment, crime rate is low here; from the crime statistics we normally prepare, there is a downward trend in the way crime has been occurring”. He said, the most commonly reported offence in Makeni is assault. On reports relating to unlawful carnal knowledge, Koroma said, they used to get reports on unlawful carnal knowledge “but that has not been in large numbers”. For July, he said, they received 2 rape cases and 1 case of abuse on a young girl. He disclosed that, the Police normally get the cooperation of the court in Makeni. “We are normally motivated by the court in charging cases to court because; they don’t play with cases”. On how the police have been working with the community through the community policing partnership, Koroma said, the public has been very cooperative with them, especially in giving out relevant information on crime related matters. “The community has been very helpful, when there was the rice problem; we [police] were given information by the public about people hoarding the rice, at the disadvantage of others”. He called on the community to continue working with them so that crime could be reduced in the city of Makeni. “Community policing is useful, and therefore the community must keep working with us, we need their support so that we [police] could succeed”, Koroma said.
