The Convention People’s Party (CPP) believes strongly in free market and will fully embrace and adopt it as the country’s operative economic system. It will form the fundamental basis for operating and managing the Sierra Leone economy. Under this system, the country’s economy will be completely liberalized to accommodate all of the economic reforms and measures that will be put in place to boost the country’s economy. A CPP government will ensure the full implementation of the appropriate economic and fiscal reforms that are necessary to resuscitate the country’s battered economy. Appropriate macro and micro economic policies will be put in place. This will call for institutional reforms in the management structure and operations of the country’s economic institutions including the finance, development and trade ministries and the Bank of Sierra Leone.
Implement the complete privatization of the productive sector of the economy. This will include all government owned/operated parastatals.
The private sector will be encouraged to participate more actively in the acquisition of these parastatals while others will be encouraged, supported and assisted to open more industries and business to the extent that the country will be self sufficient in most of its consumable items, minimize importation, provide employment and the surplus production exported to markets in both the West African market and the broader African market.
Investors will be encouraged, assisted, promoted and protected by the CPP government so that their confidence will be secured and assured.
Import, trade, and monetary transactions in the banking sector will be organized and liberalized to the extent that the laws of the country permit.
Development banking and credit institutions will be developed and promoted to assist investors to have access to funds and financial guarantees to invest in primary and secondary production industries in the country.
Improve revenue collection from all sectors of the economy. Taxes will continue to be the major source of revenue for both central and local governments. Thus, new tax schedules and codes will be put in place by a CPP government to ensure that the government collects all revenue that is justly due to it.
Ensure the complete eradication of corruption and corrupt practices from all sectors of the economy. The CPP has a clear idea of areas where corruption occurs in the economy and has designed systems to tackle corruption from its root causes with less bureaucracy and pain to the cronies that have perpetuated the system over the years.
Adequately remunerate the government work force in return for high standards of performance. The expansion of the private sector would create employment in all sectors of the economy and employees will no doubt be well paid also. Unemployment levels will have to be reduced to as low a level as possible.
Many Sierra Leoneans being able to afford good housing, food, pay for their children’s education, provide a little recreation and the ability to save some money.
