The National Revenue Authority (NRA) collected more revenue (Le 58.4 billion) in the first quarter (Q1) of 2019 than they did in 2020 over the same period. In the first month (January) of 2020, NRA collected Le78.9 billion more than in January 2019. But revenue collection fell by Le64.1 billion in February only for it to rise again by Le 60.5 billion in March and fall again by Le 10.5 billion in April 2020. The revised domestic revenue target for 2020 is Le 6.47 trillion and the total revenue collected so far from January to April is Le 1.78 trillion, representing 27.5% of the revised revenue target.
“If this trend continues, NRA may not meet its (Le 6.47 trillion) target for 2020.”
The data from Budget Advocacy Network’s (BAN) Compressed Revenue Analysis launched last week show “a steady progress in the 2019 domestic revenue drive” when compared to the same period in 2020.
However, domestic revenue generation suffered a year-on-year slump of -14% or $15.6m from $63.8m in March 2019 to $48.2m in March 2020. NRA was able to collect more revenue from Goods and Services Tax, (1%) Fisheries (23%) and other departments (8) in March 2020.
