A court marshal is expected to open today by vice president Sam Sumana at the military headquarters at Cockril, Wilkinson Road in Freetown.
Rtd Justice Ademusu is the Judge Advocate for the military court, which is convened to determine the guilt or innocence of military men and women accused of violating the code of military justice.
According to Captain Ken Jabbie, “the military court can determine punishments for members of the military subject to military law or may dismiss the charges based on the evidence and the case presented”.
He explained that military personnel could opt for court marshal on cases that were above summary trials.
The captain explained that, “the cases that can be tried in a court marshal are: rape, wounding with intent, and cases of security threat.”
He added that the case that fell within the purview of the court were five, pointing out that the uniqueness of the court was that “it now has an appeal court within the same system.”
Captain Jabbie explained that lawyers Cole and Mansaray were the prosecutor and defense counsel respectively.
He explained that, “this court is equivalent to the Sierra Leone magistrate court.”
