Port Loko, SIERRA LEONE – Sulaiman M Conteh of Bai Bureh Warriors delivered a stunning performance last Saturday, sealing a lone goal that brought an end to Bo Rangers’ unbeaten streak since April 17, 2022, when they suffered a 3-1 defeat to East End Lions.
Seventeen-year-old Conteh, a native of Brookfields, Freetown, joined the Warriors early in the season, making a remarkable debut in the country’s elite league. His goal, the second in this year’s league, proved to be a game-changer.
Reflecting on his earlier achievement, Conteh shared, “My first goal was against Wilberforce Strikers, a crucial header in the closing minutes of the match that secured an equalizer for us.”
Expressing his joy in ending Bo Rangers’ 48-game unbeaten streak, Conteh revealed, “I’ve achieved similar feats before, but this one is special, and I feel immense joy. When I scored the goal, my mother’s image flashed in my mind, even though she wasn’t on the field. I dedicate this goal to her,” he disclosed in an exclusive interview with Awoko.
The striker sees the victory as a morale boost for his team in the league. “For the past five games, we’ve faced challenges, struggling to secure a goal or a victory. The win against Rangers is inspiring, and I’m confident that with this victory, we are committed to earning more wins in upcoming matches,” Conteh emphasized on Monday.
Describing the winning moment, Conteh highlighted the importance of teamwork. “The ball originated from our left wing, passed from our winger to our left-back, who took a shot. Although the Rangers’ goalkeeper was in a good position to save the shot, he missed the opportunity. Yumkella, our number seven, had a sixty percent chance of scoring but made a commendable cross to me. I trapped it with my right foot and placed the ball at the back of the net,” he narrated.
The speculation surrounding Conteh’s playing style draws comparisons to Didier Drogba, the former Chelsea striker. Coach Abdul Lavalie, the head coach of Bai Bureh Warriors, affirmed, “Sulaiman is one of the youngest players in the country right now. He’s a fine and young striker who can hold onto the ball, take on a player one-on-one, and create a lovely chance or score. I can confirm his style of play is similar to Didier Drogba when he played for Chelsea.”
Regarding such comparisons, Conteh expressed his appreciation, stating that reaching such success would be a dream come true. The celebrated goal scorer concluded by encouraging his teammates to strive for a continuous string of victories. AIM/27/12/2023
