Constituency 109 female volleyball team won the Freetown City Council Volleyball competition last Monday at the Victoria Park.
The competition which started with 17 Constituencies on knockout bases, ended with the four best constituencies playing on a round robin bases in both male and female categories.
Constituency 109 won the competition, securing nine points from three matches played and they defeated constituency 103 by two straight sets 25-9 and 25-16 in the last match.
Constituency 97 ended in second place and constituency 103 came third.
In the male category, it was a win for constituency 97 as they also secured nine points from their three matches. The last match was played against constituency 109 who they defeated in three straight sets 25-13, 25-12 and 25-23. Constituencies 110 and 109 ended second and third position respectively
The winners in both categories received a million Leones each while the second and third position receives five hundred thousand Leones and two hundred and fifty thousand Leones respectively.
During the closing ceremony the Chairman of Youth Education and Sports councilor Abubakarr Kamara said that Freetown City Council is bent on promoting sports in the country that’s why they are organizing these competitions and also to display the passion they have for sports that’s why they have a team in division one league.
The Secretary General for the Western area Volleyball team Gibril Bangura said they appreciated such competitions and appeal to them to organize more competitions in the provinces as Freetown is not Sierra Leone and he also appeal to the government to come on board to support the discipline.
The assistant secretary general of the association Alex Bonapha said they were impressed with the competition and he commended the players for exhibiting their talents during the week long competition.
The Secretary General of the National Olympic Committee Joseph Nyande said it is very important for sports to develop in the country and to achieve that every body need to come on board and the sports Freetown City Council chose to sponsor Volleyball is one of the best sports in the country.
He also mentioned that they are trying to work with the National Sports Council and the Freetown City Council to put structures in place for the development of sports in the country and he also said that he was moved by the players’ talents demonstrated by the players.
The Director of Sports Bai Kabia in his contribution said, he is happy for such tournament because if there are no activities their will be no work for him, and during this competition more talented Volleyball players have been spotted which is good for the game.
He disclosed that the Volleyball association now has a challenge because they should have done what Freetown City Council has done. There were no losers but winners.
The deputy Mayor Gibril Kanu who deputized the mayor said the players have made them feel proud and he commended the councilors because they were able to put a team together in short notice to represent their various constituencies.
He mentioned that they have decided to sponsor the volleyball competition because football is not the only sports in the country and they will now try to have a volleyball team that would be representing FCC in competition in the future.
The coordinator of the competition Rhodes said the competition was a success, that is why they want organize it annually to discover new talents in the discipline.
