A teachers group calling themselves the Concern Teachers says they have collected over twenty thousand signatures from teachers in their support of them, yesterday resolved to demonstrate come Monday at the Ministry of Education.
The concern teachers yesterday assembled at the Brima Atttouga Mini Stadium to take resolutions against the Sierra Leone Teachers Union (SLTU). Over one hundred teachers from various Schools attended.
The interim Chairman of Concern Teachers, M.A Fadika explained the reasons for their convergence that it was a fight for the welfare of the Teachers and also the continued robbing of the teachers by SLTU.
Fadika said the SLTU should stop knifing Le7, 500.00 from their monthly salaries for which nothing was done with the money. He further told the teachers that because the SLTU has not paid attention to the welfare of the teachers, they have been reduced to a sub-human entity in the country.
Fadika narrated that they have held series of meetings with the SLTU executive and the Labor Minister on the restructuring of the SLTU executive that will be representative and that the coming elections should be with held forthwith.
He also said they have protested against the setting up of the constitutional review committee which he described as lacking the real representation of the general teachers body.Teachers upon teachers expressed their dissatisfaction at the way the SLTU is over seeing their affairs. One teacher from Kankalay, Patricia Lansana revealed that she was a widow and that four years ago, executives from the SLTU gave them forms to fill hoping that they were going to be assisted but to no avail.
Another teacher, Mohamed Conteh from Services Secondary School Juba, spoke that it was heart rendering to see teachers suffering “look at the new teachers, since last year September when they started teaching, they have not received salaries and the ministry is just concerned with verification without results” he said.
The Concern Teachers agreed that the Finance Ministry should stop paying their dues to SLTU, no elections to be held until further notice, the SLTU to account for all the dues they have collected since 2001-2008.
It means out of the 33,000 teachers and the Le7, 500.00 cut off from their monthly pay, for a month it is two hundred and forty seven Million five hundred thousand Leones (Le247,500,000).
If this is added up for a year, it is Two billion nine hundred and seventy Million Leones (Le2,970,000,000) which if added for seven years as demanded by the Concern teachers adds up to twenty billion, seven hundred and ninety Million Leones.
This is part of what the Concern Teachers are demanding for the SLTU to account for.
