In an effort to bring up good and responsible Sierra Leonean children, the Director Concerned Mothers Haja Mamie AggreyAruna has taken a direct attack on the way radio stations air jingles nationwide.
She made the attack at a five hours Security Deliberation meeting at the Bo East Police Station conference room. She told an audience of stakeholders of Bo City that this was some of the sources of the “insecurity amidst us in our communities.”
Radio stations throughout the country she explicated don’t only check the content of jingles they air least say censor their programmes. “And these things are having negative effect on the young brains of the children growing in our societies.” The stations she stated were not the only ones responsible for this untoward behaviour but also some elders in society. “The utterances of some elders on radio stations were producing bad effect on the minds of the children in this country.”
All in the name of money, radio stations she said air jingles with obscene language without even censoring them. “And because of the love of money Sierra Leoneans have put everything aside, which is not supposed to be.”
Choosing to leave the name out, she cited a chief at a time in a radio programme. The chief she said made utterances not expected of an elder. She said that it was wrong for elders to openly tell children to report to the police when their rights were taken. With such pronouncement coming from an elder on a radio station she said: “was totally wrong as it is the mother and father that own the child.”
