A Commercial Sex Association has been formed in Kenema and the coordinator Isatu Ansu said the initiative for the formation of the association came as a result of the manner and attitude of men towards commercial sex workers which she referred to as gross molestation and humiliation.
Isatu Ansu said the association was formed in 2008 and has so far registered 80 members since its formation in order to provide an alternative livelihood for commercial sex workers in Kenema.
The major objective of the association according to the coordinator is to enhance their capacity through skills training for young girls engaged in commercial sex, partner with other organizations to combat Gender based violence amongst several others.
She pleaded with the government, women organizations, and development partners to come to the aid of the organization for the attainment of its dreams.
The consultant of the association described commercial sex as a menace in a post war community where poverty and illiteracy is prevalent at the moment.
Mohamed Sannoh said the association is currently working on a strategic work frame which intends to address the problems of commercial sex workers.
Sannoh also said their current activity is to sensitize the sex workers in a bid to change their mind set from commercializing sex as a means of their daily sustenance.
He maintained that they have developed project proposals that are ready to be sent to development partners as a means of raising funds on behalf of members of the association.
Mohamed Sannoh added that when funds are available they will engage members of the association in various skills training ranging from self reliance to sustainable livelihood in order to provide an alternative means of life for commercial sex workers.
