The Mayor of Freetown His Lordship Herbert George-Williams has told Awoko that the Freetown City Council is planning to build
an ultra modern market at the Victoria Park.
He said the project is now in an advanced stage and the cost of it would be around $20 million.
Explaining about the market, the Mayor said it would be very modern with car parks that would take about 500 cars, modern
toilet facilities and a shop that would be exclusively for products that people move out of the country to buy.
Mayor Herbert George-Williams averred that the country lacks enough market facilities and that would be a priority to his
administration in the future, even though they have been repairing existing ones.
Presently the Le1.8 billion market around the Victoria Park is at the completion stage and it would be inaugurated early
November.
Speaking about the Municipal Schools he said the council will do all it can in making education a priority as they have been
supplying school materials last week and will make sure that all the schools are fully equipped to enhance better education.
He also stressed the point that if education is to improve, the teachers should be well taken care off. “We are now planning
to start giving out soft loans to our teachers and help them out with some of their problems”, the Mayor said.
The Mayor said education is very important to any country’s development and they at the council will make sure they improve
education in the city and beyond.
On health, the Mayor said they will soon start giving out subventions to hospitals to help them work in a more harmonious
environment.
The Mayor also said that plans for the rebuilding of City Hall are on course as they are working on it as well as working
with investors who would come to invest in the city.
He mentioned the stores that are now being exhibited at the grounds of the City Hall for all those who are interested to go
and buy as they are decent and safe for doing business.
The Mayor congratulated the staff and management of Freetown City Council and encouraged them to continue to work in the
interest of the city saying more will be done to improve their lives. He also thanked the Councilors for their support in
achieving all what they did during the first year in office.
