Some Pensioners of the Freetown City Council are requesting permission and Police protection to stage a peaceful demonstration from up gun to Congo Cross Police Station against the Freetown City Council Mayor.
A letter which was signed by their President, S.A Bangali who was the retired Internal Auditor and the Secretary General E.C.K Deigh also retired Internal Auditor stated that they wanted to demonstrate against the former Mayor, Winstanley Bankole Johnson and the present Mayor Herbert George Williams for an alleged offence of manipulation of the pensioner’s superannuation fund and non payment of money withdrawn from or remitted to the Mayor, Chief Administrator and City Treasurer.
They say the fund was withdrawn from the account of the Crown Agents in London to carry out pay off payment to the pensioners of Freetown City Council.
The Pensioners reacted that having exhausted all administrative avenues relating to the manipulation of the superannuation fund by the former and present Mayors as they state they could not react to their various memoranda exposing misappropriation of the superannuation fund.
They alleged that Mayor Herbert George Williams incriminated himself by declaring that the balance of the fund which is about 2.5 Million Pounds sterling has been transferred to the development fund of the City Council.
The superannuation fund is made up of deductions from the monthly salaries of employees of City Council at the rate of 5% and 7% respectively and they are also alleging the suppression of a refund of 3.1 Billion Leones due the pensioners as a result of under payment caused by inclusion of illegal payments from the pensioners fund.
They are requesting an interest of 5Billion Leones due them which was cancelled by the former Mayor and also that he withdrew 1Million Pounds Sterling to pay pensioners with an outstanding balance of 4.2 Billion Leones.
The Pensioners are confirming that the idea to transfer their superannuation fund to a development fund is evidence of aiding and abetting the offence of conspiracy to defraud the pensioners. “It is not in good faith for Mayor Herbert George Williams to transfer the superannuation fund to the development fund.
The transfer would create loop holes for fraud especially at a time when government has provided development to local Governments” they stated.
