The Sierra Leone Cigarette Sellers Association (CISA) has just concluded its executive elections and incumbent president Junior Vandy Lansana has won unopposed.
Speaking to media practitioner recently at CISA’s head office in Freetown, the representative of the Sierra Leone Traders Union, Marie Bob Kandeh who chaired the electoral process disclosed that it was more of a referendum, than an election.
She explained that since there was nobody to contest Mr. Vandy “we decided that in order to save time lets come up with a referendum so that members will unanimously reaffirm that they want the incumbent for another term.”
This she explained was done through a nationwide consensus “We then went nationwide reading the declaration to our members and forms were also issued to them to state whether they are supportive of the declaration or not,” she explained.
As the chairperson of that process I was also in the field explaining to members and ensuring that members signed – whether in support or not of the declaration.
In his statement, the incumbent president explained that CISA is a registered organization which was formed in 1994 by those trading tobacco.
“Since I took office that was in 2002, I’ve restructured the organization. It can now boast of a bank account, a solicitor and nationwide membership,” he explained.
He also noted that in his new term of office, he will surely endeavor to take the association to another level.
