To provide continued support to the educational sector with the aim of ensuring a better society especially for the children who are future leaders of the country, the Choithrams International Foundation yesterday presented the sum of Le 85, 500,000 (eighty five million five hundred thousand Leones) to the foundation’s School Scholarship Committee.
The Managing Director of the Choithrams Group, Ken Azad while presenting the Cheque said that the foundation is used to contributing Le 61, 000, 000 (sixty one million Leones) to the Committee but that this year, they were approached by the Chairman of the Committee for the amount to be increased, because according to him, the beneficiaries have increased with time.
“We looked into the request and today we are donating the sum of eighty five million five hundred thousand Leones for this year’s scholarship programme,” Mr. Azad said.
The Director said the scholarship scheme is a legacy of the late Choithram who established the foundation decades ago and that since then they have been given scholarships to students to help in their education. This year, a total of three hundred and nineteen students from primary and junior and senior secondary schools across the country. According to the Director, all charity projects are being implemented directly by the foundation and that these have been going on over the years without any interruption.
Ken Azad expressed optimism for the continuation of foundation as they are committed to maintaining the legacy of the late Choithram. He also disclosed the Foundation’s desire to construct a school in Freetown where free education would be provided for the children.
Talabi I.C. Lucan Chair of the School Scholarship Committee expressed gratitude for the offer and noted that funds provided have always been used in the right direction in the interest of promoting education in the country at the lower level. She maintained that the grant-in-aid had been given to deserving students and described the grant-in-aid as “more than a scholarship.
Talabi Lucan hoped that the original intention that the founder had which was to build a school for pupils and provide free education will come into fruition once they secure a piece of land in Freetown.
