The Chinese embassy in Sierra Leone on Thursday showed a film on the upcoming Beijing Olympics and Chinese Culture at the China Friendship Hall in Freetown.
Delivering his opening remarks, Ambassador Cheng Wenju, said the Beijing Olympic Games would be held on August 8, 2008. He noted that, “now in China all constructions for the Games have been completed, various testing games are going on well and the tickets for the Games are on sale”.
The Chinese government and people, he said, were ready to embrace athletes and spectators from all over the world, adding that China’s promise of Green Olympics, Hi-tech Olympics and Peoples Olympics would surely come to reality. “Now the Olympic torch is relaying through 113 cities in China…the most exciting moment was when the torch reached the top of Mt. Everest on May 8th “, he stated.
In the past month, the Olympic torch finished its relay across the world and was warmly welcomed and actively participated in by many countries and peoples. Especially in Tanzania, the deep and sincere friendship between the Chinese people and African people was clearly demonstrated, he stated.
Mr Wenju pointed out that, “frankly speaking, the torch relay was disturbed by a handful of anti-China elements in a few countries and some even attempted to grab the torch from a disabled woman bearer. We strongly condemn such shameful acts violating the Olympic spirit and undermining the success of Beijing Olympics”.
He stated that the Chinese people were with sincere hearts to host the Olympics and that they believed that the Olympics should be splendid events enjoyed by the whole world.
The Ambassador maintained that supported by all friendly countries including Sierra Leone, the Chinese government and people would overcome various difficulties and host successful Olympics with Chinese characteristics.
Mr Wenju disclosed that 128 countries were supporting Beijing to host the Games and that more than 100 heads of state or governments and royal members would attend the opening ceremony.
He remarked that the Sierra Leone-China Friendship Society is a social organization that publicizes China and promotes the friendship between China and Sierra Leone.
