The Ministry of Education Youths and Sport has ended a three day workshop for pupils of primary schools at the Assembly of God Primary school compound Sannoh Street in Kenema city.
Earlier at the opening ceremony the Inspector of schools Mustapha Kallon described the workshop as important for children in the community.
Mr. Kallon also said the workshop will also help the children to know their role and responsibilities as children to their parents and the society as a whole.
He explained the importance of the workshop for the school children and the essence of Good governance as the workshop will enable the pupils to know the code of conduct of children, the Rights of children in and out of school premises and in the home of the children in their respective communities.
The Deputy Director of Education Kenema John Amara Swaray in his statement said children must not be discriminated in society because of their status adding some parents deprive a child his rights because of one reason or another.
He maintained that children dropout of schools due to the suppression from their parents as these can cause children to join bad companies.
The Deputy Director of Education explained the ways children should exercise their rights to their elders, parents and the manner they are use to control these rights. He said the establishment of children governments in schools is a new concept conceived as a means of translating the convention on the right of the children in the society, to the school management and in the classroom.
He finally said that there are a lot of child abuses in some communities such as sexual harassment on girls, drug abuse, rape, child trafficking which he said are all bad for children stressing that plans are under way to conduct similar workshop for parents and guidance.
Aloyscious Moiwo and Lucy Gaojia who were the facilitators encouraged the children to take the workshop very seriously so that they can pass it on to their colleagues in their schools and other schools in their localities. The schools that took part in the workshop include the K.D.E.C. Blama town, Assembly of God primary school Kenema, K.D.E.C. school at Hangha town, Holy Rosary primary school Dama road in Kenema, the National Islamic Koi, SLMP primary school in Hangha town, K.D.E.C. school at Pandebu in Dama chiefdom and the National Islamic at Panguma Lower Bambara chiefdom.
