Chief Sacquee in whose Chiefdom Koidu Holdings operates has while urging journalists to be fair in their reporting revealed that the same period in which Koidu Holdings exported 87 million dollars worth of diamonds Hisham Mackie a Lebanese dealer exported 204 million dollars worth of diamonds.
Chief Sacquee who was addressing visiting journalist to his chiefdom said “This same period that we are talking about that Koidu Holdings exported 87 million Hisham Mackie exported 204 million dollars worth of diamonds but how many of you will tell me who is Hisham Mackie?” he asked.
“Every body knows about Koidu Holdings” he said adding “Hisham does not have to employ anybody he does not buy fuel he just sits there.”
The traditional ruler disclosed that “90% of the diamonds from Kono ends up in Hishams office he does not have to spend he does not have to employ anybody but you don’t hear about those people.”
He questioned “what contribution has the Lebanese community for example made to this community?”
“Kassim Basma came here the year I was born 1960 let Kassim Basma show me one road that he can tell me (they) constructed this road infact they said they were going to build a Lebanese college which they started 20 years ago … it was just two weeks ago that finally they handed over the structure to some representative from the VPs office they want to convert it into something else.”
“I want to let people know that I feel proud and fortunate to have Koidu Holdings in my chiefdom I know one of the problems here in Africa and especially in my country is unemployment people want to work there is no work if I have a company that is providing employment facilities for my people I think I have to be excited about that” Chief Sacquee maintained.
“Sometimes I am disappointed when facts are not crosschecked (and) when misconceptions are turned into reality” he noted.
The traditional ruler explained “I was saying to a friend of mine who is an Honourable Member of Parliament he said Chief we are going to review the agreement with Koidu Holdings, I am like fine, this is really fine, this is beautiful but have you ever really taken the time to go into Koidu Holdings to find out … to cross check most of those facts I said Koidu Holdings is not making any profit … Oh infact that is what people don’t want to hear (they say) Chief Sacquee is now the lawyer for Koidu Holdings.”
Chief Sacquee argued “maybe you know something that I don’t know maybe you are privy to documents that I don’t but show me the documents that is the way I draw my conclusions… I am not going to sit there because Mr X Says Koidu Holdings is having two buckets of diamonds per day I take that prove to me that is what is going on.”
He noted further that “Besides the fact that they are employing people in this community there are some other good things that KH is doing which sometimes it goes unmentioned nobody says anything about it they just slap it underneath the rug its only what they perceive to be the bad things that are highlighted.”
He pointed out “I am sure if you had gone out there you would have seen a big rice farm this is an hundred acre rice farm we were able to do that through the agricultural development fund … zero point zero one of diamond sales regardless of whether they make profit or not should come to this chiefdom for the development of agriculture we activated that last year and we’ve started and I think the community knows how many people have been working in that farm … every day you go there you must meet forty, fifty people working there they’ve been paid creating jobs.”
Koidu Holdings he said “has been doing things they are not required to do there is nowhere in the agreement they were supposed to open a clinic to be treating people” but such things are not mentioned he said adding “so lets be very fair.”
