Bo, SIERRA LEONE – In a significant milestone for sports inclusivity, Chief Minister David Moinina Sengeh of President Bio’s government inaugurated Blind Judo at the Bo Stadium on December 26, 2023. The launch took place during the first edition of the Sierra Leone National Olympic Committee championship.
Expressing his commitment to fostering inclusivity, the Chief Minister remarked that he had previously visited the participants in their school, but this marked the first time they were taking their skills to the field. He commended both the Sierra Leone Judo Association and the International Judo Federation for this ground breaking initiative in Sierra Leone.
“I want to thank both the Sierra Leone Judo Association and the International Judo Federation for this ground breaking moment in Sierra Leone,” stated Sengeh during the launch.
The President of the Judo Association, Idriss Massaquoi, shared that the Blind Judo program had been in progress for several months, featuring demonstrations and techniques. However, the decision was made to officially launch it during the Sierra Leone National Olympic Committee championship, signifying its recognition both locally and internationally.
The introduction of Blind Judo not only expands the horizons of sports in Sierra Leone but also promotes inclusivity and provides a platform for individuals with visual impairments to showcase their talents on a broader stage. The Sierra Leone National Olympic Committee championship serves as an ideal platform for such ground breaking initiatives that promote diversity and unity through the spirit of sportsmanship.
