The Catholic Youth Organization (C.Y.O), Western Area on Sunday 6th February, 2011 held a thanksgiving Mass in honour of their patron Saint Don Bosom. The Mass which was presided over by Rev. Fr. Paul Jusu took place at the Sacred Heart Cathedral at Siaka Stevens Street Freetown.
Explaining the nitty-gritty of the celebration President of the Catholic Youth Organization Western Area, William Freeman said 31st January every year is observed by Catholics all over the world as the Feast Day of Saint Don Bosco.
Saint Don Bosco was a Priest that gave up his entire life to serve young people and help them achieve their dreams of becoming productive people in society. He became an icon to youths within the church due to his selfless service to young people and the Catholic Church in general.
The Youth President said it is because of the unique qualities of Saint Don Bosco that young people within the Catholic Church worldwide decided on him as their patron Saints so that his history could serve as a source of inspiration to young people.
As part of the celebration the CYO organized a Football competition among Catholic Churches in the Western Area in which Saint Martin’s Parish at Black Hall Road emerged as winner while Holy Cross Parish at Lowcost Housing took second position. At the Mass, the CYO of Sacred Heart Cathedral was crowned as Unit of the year following a fund raising competition.
Speaking to the youths and members of the congregation during the Mass President William Freeman encouraged his colleagues to be focused and stay away from things that will put the image of youths into disrepute as they are the ones that the present generation depends on for a brighter future of the Catholic Church and the country as a whole. The President went further to disclose future plans of his executive as they intend to join in the country’s 50th Independence Anniversary celebration with a massive campaign against violence among young people.
