An unspecified number of passengers have been drowned in the Sewa River when a dugout canoe capsized Monday evening at the Gendema ferry crossing point in Wandor chiefdom, Kenema city.
According to one of the Kenema Councilors in Wandor Chiefdom, Memunatu Kemokai, the canoe was jam-packed with passengers and goods crossing from Gendema to Gawama when it capsized.
She disclosed that four of the passengers were rescued while three copses had so far been found.
The councilor appealed to the government and other humanitarian organizations to come to their aid.
“A bridge at that crossing point is our major need…so many lives have been claimed by the river in the past,” she stated.
The police at Boajibu town are yet to ascertain how many people drowned.
