Candiono Foundation is a Community-based foundation located at No 2 Septimus Vandi Street, Fornikoh Section in Kenema City to serve the people of Eastern Sierra Leone.
Speaking to Awoko at his office the Founder of Candiono Foundation, Federico Candiano disclosed that his foundation is a charitable organization; registered with the Ministry of Social Welfare, Gender and Children Affairs and have been operating for a year now.
Giving a brief background of the organization, the Founder explained that in 2007 Candiono Foundation was established to develop human capacity and increase self – reliance for people in Eastern Sierra Leone; by eliminating poverty, illiteracy, malnutrition and improve basic education, health and child survival.
He stressed that the rural areas in Sierra Leone have serious and growing interrelated problems. Most of the problems start with elementary school aged children, who live in dire poverty, high risk families and poor neighborhoods. Poverty, peer influence, poor home environment, no afternoon supervision and lack of positive adult role models are the major risk factors that contribute to the problems among Sierra Leonean children and youths. As these children grow older, the problems become more severe and difficult to alter into positive lifestyles. The problems become evident when many drop out of schools, involve in alcohol or drug abuse and teenage pregnancy.
The foundation now focuses on serving the poor, disadvantaged children and youths in Eastern Sierra Leone. Candiano Foundation is highly regarded for its innovative and comprehensive programs namely Education Initiative, Health Programs and Family Support. It strives to preserve family relationship by making children and families more self sufficient.
The foundation serves poor, abused, neglected and orphan children up to the age of 18; who need a safe place to live while family reunification, permanency, special medical or independent living needs are addressed, specially at the end of Sierra Leone civil wars. Services are flexible to accommodate a wide range of needs and may be offered in the family’s home.
The Candiano Foundation collaborates with Community-based organizations, educational and health institutions. The Foundation would provide textbooks, notebooks and school supplies for the students in the Eastern Sierra Leone. The foundation also develops child sponsorship for children; this sponsorship includes scholarships, uniforms and living expenses. The human rights of the child is observed and maintained. At current the Foundation is sponsoring twelve (12) beneficiaries who were identified through the Family Support Unit (FSU) of the Sierra Leone Police in Kenema and is hoping to help more people in the Region by seeking support from donors.
