Freetown, SIERRA LEONE – Former referee manager in the Sierra Leone Football Association (SLFA) who is the Safety and Security Manager at the SLFA Mohammed Bowen Freeman has been appointed by the Confédération Africaine De Football (CAF) as Consultant for the TotalEnergies African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2022 to be held in Algeria.
Bowen Freeman said during his stay in Algeria he will support the Local Organizing Committee through professional advice on the execution of the safety and security concept and also ensure the compliance and full implementation of the CAF safety and security regulations.
During an interview conversation from Algeria, Bowen Freeman said he is so delighted to represent Sierra Leone in the 2nd biggest stage in football in the continent.
When asked if he is the only Sierra Leonean appointed by CAF to be part of the CHAN, he said I’m the only Sierra Leonean that has been contacted by CAF in any capacity.
He also revealed that the championship will start on the 13th of this month but over the weekend he has started working in Algeria and in a one-day Safety and security seminar for Commanders.
In brief, the 2022 African Nations Championship known as CHAN 2022 for short and/or the TotalEnergies African Nations Championship for sponsorship purposes will be the 7th edition of the biennial association football tournament organized by the Confederation of African Football (CAF), featuring national teams consisting of players currently playing in their respective local leagues. This edition of the tournament will be held in Algeria between 13 January and 4th February 2023.
Originally scheduled from 10th July to 1st August 2022, CAF rescheduled the tournament to January 2023 following an announcement at an executive committee meeting held on 10th September 2020 via video conferencing, citing the postponement of the 2020 African Nations Championship to 2021 and the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations to 2022 due to the COVID -19 pandemic in Africa as well as the already-scheduled 2022 FIFA World Cup in November–December 2022.
