Makeni, SIERRA LEONE – On December 2, 2023, the Bombali Deaf Development Association (BDDA) and three other Disabled Persons Organizations (DPOs) in Bombali District exhibited their soccer prowess in a series of thrilling inter-DPOs friendly matches. This showcase served as a poignant call to the government to address their concerns outlined in the 2011 Disability Act.
Organized by the Bombali District Coalition for Persons with Disabilities and its partners, these matches were a fitting tribute to the 2023 International Day for Persons with Disability (IDPD). Celebrated annually on December 3 since 1992, IDPD aims to raise awareness about disability issues, promote inclusion, and emphasize the benefits of an accessible society.
The participating DPOs included the Bombali Deaf Development Association, Amputees and War Wounded, the Polio Persons Development Association (PoPDA), and the Sierra Leone Association for the Blind. Each DPO fielded two teams, A and B, competing in a spirit of camaraderie and athleticism.
A total of 10 goals were scored throughout the matches, with each team securing at least one goal. The PoPDA team A, led by the outstanding performance of Saidu Jalloh, achieved a remarkable hat-trick, scoring three goals.
Three matches concluded in a 1-1 draw: Bombali Deaf Development Association versus Amputees and War Wounded, and Sierra Leone Association for the Blind team A versus team B. The PoPDA team A secured a 3-1 victory against their team B.
In the concluding match, the DPOs collaborated to form a united team, facing the Bombali District Coalition for Persons with Disabilities and their partners. The DPOs emerged triumphant with a 1-0 win.
Post-matches, representatives from the DPOs expressed their satisfaction in displaying their soccer talents at the Makeni Wusum Stadium. They conveyed their excitement in demonstrating that individuals with disabilities can excel in football and actively engage in sports. ARW/3/12/2023
