In an effort to ensure quality education in Bo district and to motivate school pupils to be serious with education, the Bo District Council has decided to give scholarships to 150 pupils who did very well in this year’s National Primary School Examination (NPSE).
Speaking to Awoko from his office at the Bo District Council, the Deputy Chairman of council; Joseph Munda Bindi disclosed to this press his council’s determination to boost the education sector of the district and to encourage school pupils to perform better in external examinations.
The Deputy Chairman of council explained to Awoko that the scholarship will target pupils in all 15 chiefdoms in the Bo district. Speaking about developmental activities that the council had embarked on during their first year in office Joseph Munda Bindi disclosed that the council had also embarked on improving the health and agricultural sectors within the district. He went on to explain that the council was able to monitor farming activities in the district this year and they are expecting a very high yeilds produce during harvest. He called on government to now give the necessary support to farmers that will enable them market their products.
Joseph Munda Bindi however expressed dissatisfaction in the manner in which the last revenue generated from local tax collection was directed by government. He intimated Awoko that over Le 400 Million was generated from local tax in 2008 but to the dismay of the council that money was used to pay chiefdom functionaries in the 15 chiefdoms under the Bo district.
“I only hope that such will not happen this year” he querried. The Deputy Chairman further explained to this press that throughout this year the council has been surviving on revenue generated from property rates which they only introduced this year. The council has also been using revenue generated from diamond mining royalties given by government and the use of council’s infrastructures like the multi purpose hall at Sewa road. He commended the people of Bo for complying with local tax payment and those that will refuse to pay after 30th January he warned, will pay three times the original sum.
