As part of the devolved function of the Bo City Council, the council has on Friday donated Science Learning Materials to the Bo Government Secondary School.
The donation which took place right in the Principal corridor of the Administrative Building of the Bo School comprised of 20 equipment amongst which were Microscope, Conical and Distillation flasks, Ammeter and Voltmeter, Zinc Carbornate and Nitrate, Pipette (25cm3), Burette, Filter Funnel to name but this few.
The donation is in consonance with the devolved functions to the 19 Local Councils within the nation among which functions are the “Provision of Basic Education within the mandates of all Local Councils.
Meanwhile, Bo School is a Senior Secondary School and in fact one of the designated Schools of Excellence in Sierra Leone. The school still maintains its Junior Secondary School, and this is the reason why Bo School is one of the first schools to gain from this administrative and political responsibility of the Bo City Council. But the School has lagged in the past two years in public examinations in the sciences. In fact, almost all the boys who wrote to the West African Senior Secondary School Examinations could not secure even a credit in the Subject of Chemistry last year. Wurie Jalloh Councilor cum Teacher of the Bo City Council and Bo Government Secondary school respectively while handing over the science equipment to the school stated the “Bo City Council is donating the Science Equipment to the Bo Government Secondary School because the School has got a Junior Secondary School.” He continued that “It is the responsibility of the Council to do this.”
He said he was personally “delighted for donating these items” as he shares the concerns of the appalling situation in the educational sector.
Principal Bo Government Senor Secondary School Raymond Bob Katta in his brief remarks praised the City Council saying that the council “is made up of level headed people.” Thankfully he articulated that the Head of the Council comes in the scientific figure of Dr Wusu Sannoh.
“He is a renowned Scientist and who was one time Head of a Science Department at the Njala University College.”
Dropping from there he talked briefly of how his administration will use the “items for their intended purpose and appropriately.” The Senior Prefect Abdul Razack Jabba thanked the local government for the donation. He said the school has been performing badly in recent times in the Sciences in the Public Examinations but that with the coming of these much needed Teaching and Learning Materials for the Science Department the trend would be reversed.
